What is asset tokenization in Brazil

An introductory view of the digital representation of rights over real assets.

Last updated: June 2026

A simple definition

Tokenization is the process of representing, through digital technology (often blockchain), rights over a real-world asset — such as revenue participation, credits, quotas, or other contractually defined rights. The token acts as a unit of record and traceability; it does not, by itself, replace the legal framework governing the underlying asset.

Tokenization is not the same as speculation

Many people associate tokens only with market volatility. In real-world asset (RWA) tokenization, the focus is often organization, standardization, operational transparency, and digital experience for issuers and participants. Risk and return depend on the asset, legal structure, and market conditions — they should never be presented as guaranteed.

Examples of tokenizable assets

Not every asset follows the same model. Structure depends on documentation, applicable regulation, and project goals. Common examples in market literature:

  • Receivables and credit rights;
  • Equity participations and corporate rights, when the legal structure allows;
  • Rights tied to businesses with real application (such as loyalty programs or commercial utility);
  • Real estate and other assets, in models that vary by custody, registry, and offering rules.

How it works in practice

In general: (1) the issuer or structurer defines the asset and documentation; (2) the token represents the right per contract and project rules; (3) participants access information and operate under eligibility rules; (4) blockchain may record movements and improve traceability — always together with legal obligations and off-chain information (prospectus, reports, etc.).
